Leafy VPN Review Sections

LeafyVPN is a newcomer on the VPN scene. They offer secure, encrypted VPN service at a competitive price. LeafyVPN has servers in 10 countries including China making them one of the only global VPN providers to have servers inside china. They do not allow p2p or bittorrent traffic on their network at this time.

VPN Setup

Setup for LeafyVPN is quick and easy. Just download the leafy vpn client software and unzip. It doesn’t even require installing (it’s a portable executable version so you could put it on a cd or thumbdrive and keep your connection safe and secure even on public computers)

LeafyVPN’s has a number of features that stand out: most notably their Chinese servers, portable software, and 256-bit AES encryption.

Software Overview

LeafyVPN offers a simple software interface. You have the choice of server (the servers are organized by continent) and protocol (pptp, l2tp and OpenVPN) but not much else. It’s a bare bones interface but should still be functional enough for most people. We were a bit disappointed to see that the individual servers were labeled only by country, not city, so you really have no idea where your server is located geographically within the country. This isn’t a big deal for International servers, but a U.S. user might care which server is closest to him.

Speed Test

This was a bit of a disappointment. We couldn’t find a single server that yielded speeds over 5 Mbps (even in the U.S.) so Leafy isn’t going to cut it for HD video streaming services like Hulu and Netflix. They don’t allow p2p either, so their target market may just be casual wifi users in need of security but not much speed. They also have a strong foothold in China (with actual Chinese servers) so a large part of their client base may be located there.

We also experienced connection issues in testing, especially on USA Servers. Leafy is still young and may be working the kinks out, but the speeds still left alot to be desired.

Price and Payment Options

While LeafyVPN offers only one level of VPN service, the price varies based on the service duration purchased.

LeafyVPN Pricing:

  • 1 month for $9/month
  • 6 months for $6.50/month
  • 12 Months for $5.70/month

LeafyVPN’s pricing is about average for the vpn category, but currently offers less than average performance and service. I would say that Private Internet Access currently represents a much better value than LeafyVPN. The one area where LeafyVPN stands out from the crowd is that they have multiple VPN servers inside China and several others in the Asian region. For people trying to break through the great firewall of china, LeafyVPN may be a decent choice. Most of the rest of us can probably find a better alternative.
